The Interesting Thing About the Road and the TableSample
UNMET EXPECTATIONS?
On this journey of life, we all have expectations. We tend to place our hope in an event or person, in our effort or ability. But, what happens when that relationship fails, or that deal doesn't close, or that baby doesn't come? What do we do with a negative diagnosis and a bleak future?
That's the story of the first followers of Jesus. They hoped that He would come to bring salvation from the oppression they were experiencing. They never thought that this King would be one who would choose to walk where we would walk, a humble, tender King. One who would love to be with children, who would dignify women, help the weakest and raise the fallen; teaching with His own life and death what it means to love.
In this passage, we see the disappointment of these followers of Jesus; because when Jesus died, hope died with Him. On that cross, to their limited understanding, their hope failed. And the same could happen to us. Perhaps you have put your hope in a relationship, in that treatment, in your job, or your knowledge and great talents. Maybe you had an expectation about how and when God "should" answer your request. But, that didn´t happen, and your hope died.
I have news for you: God is not scared of your questions, He is not intimidated by your doubts.
God is not less God because you are afraid, angry, and want to scream at heaven. He can handle it. He wants to meet you on the road and hear you speak to Him. He wants to talk to you and wants you to see Him in every step and every detail.
Today He crosses your path so you know that you can come as you are, speak to Him and tell Him what you feel. Jesus is patient and He is present. And just as He asked those men walking on the Road to Emmaus what they were talking about (while they were talking about their biggest disappointment), I would like you to imagine for a moment that He is speaking to you today, telling you: "What´s your unmet expectation, and disappointment? Give it all to me today. I can handle that. I can bear the full weight of your pain and disappointment. Trust me. I am and will be here, on the road, right next to you."
