Imperfect Dads, One Perfect Father

DAY 5 OF 10

Fathers Who Walk Away

So you will become sons of your Heavenly Father, for He makes His sun rise for sinner and saints and sends rain among the unjust and just.
Matthew 5:45 (KJV)

This was a tough daily reading to write. We know the stories of kids growing up without a dad and how it affects their lives. Some of us even lived those realities. Absent dads have possibly had the single greatest detrimental effect on the American family. That’s not an overstatement. If anything, we doubt the actual depth of those harmful effects can ever truly be known, but what we do know is you are an incredibly important part of your family’s success and your child’s future.

In what would seem like the most naturally occurring relationship in a man’s life—it isn’t. Fathers and sons (and daughters) can become like oil and water. But it wasn’t meant to be this way. God’s relationship with us was designed to be the blueprint for how we connect with our kids. It was our gift of free will and rebellion that kind of screwed it up.

Trouble between God the Father and His creations began even before man was created. Lucifer refused to accept God his Father as creator and Father. That rebellion caused eternal division and separation from God’s presence. The “father wound” continued with Adam. Yeah, that Adam, the first guy, and dad. His sin also created separation from God the Father. As dads, the hope we have is in the redemption and restoration through God's only begotten son, Jesus Christ. We don’t have to walk away because never once has our Father abandoned us.

Dad Action:

Do you have a strained relationship with your dad or your child? Pray for God's restoration over your relationships.
