Day Seven

Steps Forward

Scripture: Psalm 103:12–13; Matthew 10:14


When you are ready to let go of something from the past, it can help to do something tangible that symbolizes the release of the memory. Some people, for example, take small stones to a pond or lake, and with each stone they state a memory they desire to leave behind, then throw the stone into the lake, symbolizing the release and end of that memory’s grip on them. 

Here are other steps that can help us turn from our past toward a positive future. 


1. Take time to learn from the past without staying stuck in it. With God’s help, we can reflect on some of our negative experiences and painful memories from a brand-new perspective. 

2. Think about who you want to be now. We are not trapped, and the things we endured or experienced don’t have to define us. Just because we were victimized doesn’t mean we have to be a victim now. Just because we failed doesn’t make us a failure now. Just because our hearts are broken doesn’t mean we won’t love or be loved again. It may seem normal to hold on to past pain, but it is also normal to let it go when we are ready. 

3. Burn that bridge when you get to it. Avoid the triggers and reminders that keep pulling you back into the pain. Jesus dealt with this by releasing his followers: “If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that home or town and shake the dust off your feet” (Matthew 10:14). Imagine starting over surrounded by people who encourage and support you, not those who are toxic and abusive. 

4. Forgive yourself and others. As soon as we choose to release them and forgive, a tremendous weight falls away from us. It’s not easy but it is essential. 

5. Start again—with gratitude.


Imagine a life where the past has no power to define or limit you. Nor can it wound or shame you. You can live free today because the past has lost its control over you.
