90 Days to Wholeness: A Porn Addiction Recovery Devotional for WomenSample
(contribution written by Jennifer Miller)
If you've done your homework for the last two days, you should have a clear idea of what your bottom and top line behaviors are. If you haven't already, let us encourage you to share them with a close friend or accountability partner. If you are nervous about this, let's take a look at the possible reasons why.
We have mentioned this before: sexual addiction is an intimacy disorder. Because of a wound or trauma of our past, we have developed patterns of false intimacy through our sexually addictive behavior. This false sense of intimacy has the opposite effect of what our heart truly desires—to be known and to be loved and close. In Genesis, God knew this when He created man and then said how it was not good for man to be alone, so He created a partner for man. When we are in the process of recovery, finding relationships are vital because we have spent so much time isolated in our addiction and hiding the true vulnerability of our hearts.
Accountability is the antidote to isolation. Accountability is the step we take to begin learning what healthy relationships are. That's why it's so important to find a good accountability partner that can hold you to your bottom and top lines that you establish up front. At this point in your journey of accountability, is there anything holding you back from beginning to build that relationship? Take another look at the scripture above. The counsel of a friend is so important. They need to have access to your daily life, not be someone far removed.
When thinking about developing a relationship of accountability with another person, do you feel anxious or scared? Discuss what emotions you are having when thinking about sharing your top and bottom line behaviors with your friend or accountability partner. What is your next right step?
