90 Days to Wholeness: A Porn Addiction Recovery Devotional for WomenSample
All to Jesus I surrender;
All to Him I freely give;
I will ever love and trust Him,
In His presence daily live.
I surrender all,
I surrender all;
All to Thee, my blessed Savior,
I surrender all.
”I Surrender All”, Van DeVenter, 1896
If you grew up going to church, those lyrics may be familiar to you. I personally didn’t grow up in the church and when I finally did go to church, it wasn’t a hymn-singing church (if you know what I mean). But I knew the words somehow, perhaps from a funeral scene in a movie. It’s an old hymn inspired by Luke 14:25-33 about the cost of being a disciple of Jesus.
Did you catch that? Everything you own. This doesn’t just mean possessions or people in your life. It also means letting go of presumptions or suspicions you may have about Him.
Perhaps you are on the fence because you were abused, or something was done to you that has no reason or logic. You can’t wrap your mind around a God who would “allow” it to happen.
Counting the cost of following Jesus Christ is a part of the deal. It means asking yourself if you’re willing to let go of the pain, the shame, the guilt, the anger, and the fear in order to pick up the healing, the grace, the peace, the love, and the courage that comes with surrendering all to Jesus Christ.
What do you need to let go of today as an act of surrender to God? Remember, this isn’t a question about your behavior, but is one about your heart towards God.
Starting tomorrow, you will see the first of seven days throughout this devotional that were written by Jennifer Miller. Jennifer is a friend and colleague of mine who assisted me in completing this devotional—as she helped me make some specific points about accountability and boundaries.
