Leading Things You Didn’t Start

DAY 3 OF 5

How Are You Connected?

As followers of Jesus quite often we separate our day-to-day lives and leadership from our faith. It is not uncommon to have our faith sitting on the sideline in a meeting at work but pull it out for our Sunday experience or small group. Do you know leaders like that? They would call themselves Christians but their “work personality” would reveal something different?

This is one of the most important conversations I have with my two boys every week. We cannot live one way when we walk into church and another when we show up at school, work, or with friends.

What if our faith and our leadership were so seamless that no one would ever be able to separate them?

I recently had the privilege of capturing an interview with the Super Bowl-winning coach, Tony Dungy. He’s a legend for many reasons, like being the first African-American to coach his team to a Super Bowl Championship. What struck a chord with me in the interview was how much his faith was brought up as he answered leadership questions. It was seamless. It wasn’t weird or forceful, it just was his truth. It was inspiring. It was evident that he was connected with God daily and that was helping him integrate his faith in God with his leadership challenges.

Your source will dictate your course.

You cannot have a faith that works its way into every part of your life if you don’t have a consistent relationship with God. Staying connected at the source will help you navigate these times you’re leading in. Read John 15 and ponder on how to stay connected to God during this part of your leadership journey.

About this Plan

Leading Things You Didn’t Start

Many leaders do not initiate something new. Most of us when called upon, will step into a leadership space that someone else started. We will join a team that already exists and ownership of something we’ve inherited. Taking over requires a different leadership skill and approach than starting something from scratch. Over the next five days, let’s journey together towards God as we learn to lead things you didn’t start.
