What it looks like to follow Jesus

Learning to follow Jesus is a lifelong process. Christians are not perfect, they are simply trusting the One who is perfect. There will not be a day of your Christian life where you won’t need the grace of Jesus. The closer you get to Jesus, the more you see His perfection and your own imperfections, but that is a beautiful process of following Him by grace and faith.

There will be times in your journey of following Jesus where you feel as if in your day-to-day life you are not growing spiritually at all, and you are not very good at following Jesus. You might wonder how long you will struggle with the same sins, and why you can't seem to move past “baby steps” in following Jesus.

I remember when I was young, going on a camping trip with our relatives, and seeing one of my cousins. So much had changed in a year – he was taller, looked much older, and his voice had completely changed and gotten deeper. We were very surprised at how much he had changed, but he and his family didn't understand our surprise. They had seen his change in minutia. We were much more able to notice the change because we hadn't been with him for a year.

This is how Christian growth often looks. You can’t see how much you’re growing in the moment, but over time you will look back and exclaim "I'm not who I want to be, but thank God, I'm nowhere near who I used to be!"

But even though we will never be perfect, God calls us to follow after Him. As we read the Bible, we will learn how to follow Jesus. The Bible calls to us to die to ourselves daily by laying down selfishness and sin and choosing to follow what Jesus says each day instead.

You will never regret a life of following Jesus. He will take you places no person ever could. He will bless you and keep you. He will give you lasting fulfillment. There is nothing like a life of following Jesus.
