“We are not prepared for it yet” I have often seen young couples spending months, and sometimes years together in planning for a child. “First we want to understand each other more”; “We are still not settled”; “We are not prepared” are some of the common reasons quoted. However I believe when we start making decisions with our own minds or in our flesh, God courteously steps behind. Please don’t get me wrong. I am not saying that you don’t plan your life. What I am saying is that even as you get married, first seek God’s will concerning your family and keep yourselves open to what He has to say, instead of blindly following a set pattern of the world. (And, you have a whole lifetime to understand each other, don’t you?) I don’t think Mary was prepared when the angel of the Lord broke the good news of an impending pregnancy to her. She was engaged to Joseph and like any other young Jewish girl, was looking forward to her marriage. But when the angel of the Lord announced the news to her, she responded in immediate obedience by saying, “Be it unto me according to thy word.” On the other hand, look at Joseph. He wasn’t prepared either - A nominal job of a carpenter with hardly any savings to bring up God’s Son! But he also chose to respond in obedience to God by taking Mary as his wife. And in their radical obedience to God, they received a blessing that no other couple can ever match to! We may not understand all the plans God has for us, but we do know that His plans are for our good. God’s part is already planned, our part is to yield, and on the way He prepares us! Is God speaking to you as a couple regarding pregnancy? Does it all seem tough to handle? Are you too worried about what people will say? Trust God concerning your family because if there’s one thing that can be relied upon during pregnancy and parenting – it’s definitely not your preparation, but His grace!
