You Have My Attention: 6 Days of Creating Space for God to Move in Your Life

DAY 1 OF 6

Space

My phone buzzed signifying another email had hit my inbox, I reached to take a look when the “ding” of a text message interrupted my attention on the email with a short but direct message “Did you take care of that yesterday?” and I feel immediate regret. As I gather my thoughts around how I’d fallen short again by not accomplishing all that needed to be done, my 5 year old stumbles into the kitchen asking for a snack and help putting a toy back together that had been broken. My mind bounces from one thing to the next and I am flooded with reminders of just how short I always seem to fall, my past failures running through my mind like a ticker tape reinforcing my current struggles and they all seem to point to all that I wish I was but that I am not.

I’m sure you are no stranger to these feelings too. There is just so much noise in our lives. Noise that tells us that we need to do and become more than we currently are. All the demands and unmet expectations leave us feeling left behind, left out, and like there isn’t room for you anywhere. I wish this were an isolated picture of a really busy day or a season that would pass, but the truth is we are pulled in directions that feel so urgent and overwhelming all the time that we often leave our souls unattended because we simply feel like there is no space to give to it.

When the truth is that there is always space for you. When we look at scripture and the fathers of our faith we see that even they were pulled in directions that felt overwhelming and were regularly reminded of their failures. David was on the run. Jacob was fighting for the crown. Paul was trying to defend his faith in Jesus, all with pasts that were less than ideal. But they all brought themselves before God, just as they were, and trusted him to work out what they couldn’t.

The promise of Isaiah 26:3 is something I've learned to cling to when I'm faced with overwhelming thoughts and circumstances, "You will keep in perfect peace, those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you."

When Mack played the song “Space” for me for the first time I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the reminder that there is always space for me with Jesus, that no matter our surroundings, past, season of life, faults, or failures. He has room for us to be with Him just as we are. He has created a safe place for us to engage our hearts with His. Mack and my hope is that this song and the entire SPACE album will help you to enter into a new intimacy with God where the noise fades away and you can be you, with him.
