DAY 9 OF 10

Safe In The Strong Tower

“The name of the LORD is a fortified tower; the righteous run to it and are safe,” (Proverbs 18:10). In ancient times, fortified towers were among the best lines of defense for a city or region. As part of a stronghold or fortress, the tower was very often the strongest part of the entire structure. It was built to withstand war. It was created to provide a sure safeguard for its people. When all else failed, there was recourse in the strong tower.

There’s a lot going on in the world today. And chances are there’s a lot going on in your world, too. But I want you to know that you can find safety in Yahweh’s stronghold. You can find help in his fortress.

David, the prolific psalmist and second king of Israel, wrote a song about the shelter of God. He declares, “The LORD is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1). He goes on to say that even if a whole army were to come against him, he would not lose his faith or abandon his confidence! David is teaching us something here: if we truly understand that the supreme God is our safety, then we will not fear. Do you know that the one who defends and covers you is infinitely stronger than and superior to whatever might come against you? If you’re struggling with fear or anxiety today, God may be inviting you to perceive his presence, power, and protection in a new way.

In response to the safety of God, David seeks after the secret place of God: “One thing I ask from the LORD, this only do I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life ... For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent and set me high upon a rock,” (Psalm 27:4-5). No matter the struggle or trouble in your life, God’s presence is a safe place for you. And because God is everywhere and because his Spirit resides in you through your allegiance to Jesus, God’s presence is always accessible to you. All you need to enter in is to open the eyes of your heart and see him.

I want you to take a moment and look back over your life to this point. Is there a season or situation that you can remember where God kept you safe in the midst of turmoil? What was the problem, and how did you see God show up? Let that settle in your heart. Now, take a moment and consider what is troubling you today. Is it mental confusion? Emotional or relational turbulence? A financial problem? A spiritual attack that you can’t even articulate? As you think about the situation, declare Psalm 27:1 over it. And as you declare God’s word, remember God’s work in your life, how he protected and preserved you before. Let faith rise as you think about his past goodness and speak out his present promise.

God’s presence is your protection. His glory is your guard. Do not be afraid. Don’t let worry consume another inch of your thought life. The hand of God covers you. The shadow of the Almighty is where you live. You are safe in the strong tower.

Listen to the song wherever you find music!
