The Gospels in 30

DAY 23 OF 30

Day 23

John 1-3

The wedding at Cana reminded me of a particular verse from Luke 2. When Jesus was a little boy and His family was traveling home, following the Feast of the Passover, Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. While His parents were traveling home, they realized that Jesus was not with them, so they returned to Jerusalem. Three days later they found Him in the temple and asked, “Why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress?” After Jesus responds, verse 51 says, “And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.”

Even Jesus, the one with ALL authority, understood earthly authority and submitted to His parents. We see this same submissive spirit at play here in the Wedding at Cana.

“When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” John 2:3 ESV

Jesus’s mother presents the problem to Him. Jesus responds with, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” (John 2:4)

Remarkably, Mary doesn’t even respond to Jesus. In the next verse, she looks straight to the servants and says, “Do whatever He tells you.”

Mary seemed to have an overwhelming confidence that Jesus was going to do what she asked of Him. Jesus humbly submitted, and began to instruct the servants just as Mary had asked.

If the Son of God humbly submitted to earthly authorities, then what excuse do we really have?

About this Plan

The Gospels in 30

During this plan, you'll read the entirety of the Gospels in just 30 days. Are you up for the challenge? Doing so will require 2-4 chapters of Bible reading each day, along with a deep dive devotion highlighting a couple verses from each day's reading. We hope you enjoy this plan written by Cody Griggs, missionary to Ecuador.
