Trust in the Lord

What are we trying to do in our own lives? What do we need to be teaching to our kids? In the third chapter of Proverbs we find a wise man parenting his child. He tells him to trust in the Lord with all of his heart! This is our next parenting principle: “Teach your kids to trust in the Lord with all of their hearts.” 

What matters is our heart, not just our behavior. It is who we are, not just what we do. We want our kids to trust in the Lord with all of their hearts and not to lean on their own understanding. There are things we are not going to understand in life; that is just how it is. Some of us don’t understand why bad things happen. Why are there trials in my life? Why didn’t God protect me from this?

But most of us also don’t understand why good things happen. Why am I so blessed? Why have I been born where I live? Why am able I to do all that I do? Why am I part of such a great church? Why do I have so many great friends and so many blessings? We don’t understand the burdens, yes, but we also don’t understand the blessings.

We serve our kids best when we trust the Lord with all of our hearts, and lean not on our own understanding. We might think the blessings in our lives are because of our hard work, so we try our whole life to keep it up. This puts a lot of pressure on us. We won’t be receiving the grace of Jesus Christ. 

And if we don’t trust in the Lord when about the burdens in our life, we will think that we caused them somehow, and that God is getting back at us. But God is love (1 John 4:8). He is not vindictive. Let’s trust Him even when we don’t understand what is going on in our lives. 

Acknowledge Him in all your ways. Get to know Him in everything that you are doing. As you journey and grow in your faith, learn to say, “Lord, I don’t understand the blessings, I don’t understand the burdens, but I want to trust You with everything I have.”
