“Then make me truly happy by agreeing wholeheartedly with each other, loving one another, and working together with one mind and purpose.” Philippians 2:2
Set:
“Team beats talent when talent isn’t a team.” I believe this is true at all levels of competition. One can have all the best talent, but if those players play selfishly or aren’t helping their teammates be their best, that team will not perform to its potential. Teams win in the locker room before they win on the field. If relationships between players and coaches are based on trust, love, commitment, and mutual sacrifice, that team will have more success. We all can be great teammates and contribute to a positive culture.
In 2016 when Clemson football won the NCAA National Championship, coach Dabo Swinney told his team they would win because: “We love each other. We love where we are. We love what we do.” The Clemson program is built on caring about each other as a person, friend, and teammate. They believe in the priorities of Team – Teammate – Self, in that order. The team has goals that everyone is committed to. Everyone cares about their teammates’ success. And each individual brings their best, day in and day out. This is Philippians 2:2 in action – a team loving each other, working together, and united in mind and purpose!
That is a great picture of the family of God. He calls His team “the body.” Everyone is equally concerned for the welfare and benefit of others. In Acts 2, we see the way God’s family loves and serves each other. We are called to find a need, meet it, and encourage others on the team to do the same!
Go:
1. On a scale of 0–100%, how committed are you to your teammates? To helping them be their very best?
2. What one thing can you do to love, care for, and serve your teammates?
