Foundations Of ChristianitySample
Unmistakable
By Danny Saavedra
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”—Romans 1:20 (NIV)
Some people have a very distinct style of doing things. In fact, it’s so unique to them that you can pick it out with little effort. A good example of this is Pablo Picasso’s painting style. No one would ever mistake a Picasso for a DaVinci, Pollock, or Warhol. The same can be said of Tim Burton. His directorial style is so different from anyone else out there. As soon as the opening credits roll, you can pretty much tell you’re watching a Burton flick. His personality definitely shines through his work . . . and the same is true of God!
In today’s verse, the apostle Paul is basically spelling this out for us. God’s style is unmistakable. Why? Because it’s perfect, good, indescribable, and unexplainable. The mountains, the sun, the roaring oceans, the deepest intricacies of life and the universe . . . all show the full majesty and power of the Lord. And this had been evident since the moment God created the heavens and the earth.
This idea that Paul is putting forth here is explained by R.C. Sproul, who said, “I believe firmly that all of truth is God’s truth, and I believe that God has not only given revelation in sacred Scripture, but also, the sacred Scripture itself tells us that God reveals Himself in nature—which we call natural revelation.” This natural revelation—or general revelation as some call it—is essentially God revealing Himself through the nature (His created works). This differs from special revelation, which is direct communication by God through special divine intervention (His Word, His voice through a burning bush, dreams, visions, etc., and the incarnation of Jesus).
In light of this, no one can claim that there is no God or that everything in this universe was by chance, randomly coming into existence without purpose or meaning, without an intelligent, skilled designer at work. I personally believe it defies logic to believe that everything came about by chance; it requires more faith to believe there is no God!
This truly leaves us, as Paul said, “without excuse.” No one can claim ignorance. God has given us all such clear evidence of His existence and claims. So the next time you step outside, look around, see the works of His hands . . . see Him and worship!
DIG: Read Romans 1.
DISCOVER: What aspects of nature and the universe most clearly show evidence of God as Creator to you?
DO: Spend time in God’s creation today. Take a walk, watch the sun set, lay down under the stars, etc. Observe nature and the mighty, powerful hand of the Lord, and spend a few moments in worship.
