[1 John Series 2] Real Life Walks In The LightSample
Let’s walk in the light
God is light and there is no darkness in Him. Walking apart from God would be walking in darkness—walking in sin. Walking in darkness brings self-deception and lies.
Our society, in many ways, walks in self-deception and lies. But before we blame society, we have to first begin with our hearts. Why is society like it is? Because it is a reflection of the human heart. Of course, society influences the human heart. We can’t say that is not the case. But, at the same time, what is the problem with the world? The problem with the world is me. That is the problem with the world. It is you. We are the ones that influence society. This is not to say we are the worst of the worst. That wouldn’t be completely true either. Hopefully we are trying to influence for good. But society and our hearts mirror one another in many ways.
This leads us to think that it is possible that we live in self-deception and lies. But how did we get there? First of all, we will have to realize this: As human beings, we have trouble admitting that we’re wrong. If you don’t believe that, just get married. There are many situations in marriage when one or both spouses know they are wrong, but then they try to figure out some way to make it appear they are right and have always been. And that stirs a little bit of a battle. That is a problem. We end up in self-deception and lies because we have trouble admitting that we are wrong. Why? Because pride is in us. We are prideful people. The root of sin is pride. Pride produces sin.
Humility doesn’t produce sin. Humility doesn’t produce sinfulness and wickedness. Pride does. When we say, “I’m going to have it my way, in my fashion, in the way I want it and nobody’s going to tell me I’m wrong,” we end up prideful. That’s how Satan fell from heaven, because of his pride—wanting to be above God. It is impossible to simultaneously choose sin and humility. When we are humble before God, it is the antithesis of choosing sin.
We have to desire to walk in His light. The question for us is, do we desire to be walking in His light?
