Should You Go On A Short-term Mission Trip?

DAY 4 OF 4

So far, we’ve looked at whether or not you might take part in a short-term mission trip, as presented by your local church or other organization.

Praying for wisdom and carefully considering the opportunity leads us to see that there may be good reasons for you to go, or not to go. Or, instead of going, you may feel led to support others with your prayers and finances so that the gospel and the Kingdom of God is advanced even more effectively than if you went yourself.

No matter what God’s answer is the next time you consider the opportunity, remember that you are still part of the Great Commission – even right where you are.

Most likely, God has already placed you in a job with others who have not yet accepted Jesus as Savior. He might even have brought people from different countries and cultures to your workplace, so that following through on Jesus command to “Go make disciples of all nations” could happen right there at your work!

Can you see how this sets the stage for your daily commute to work to be your own “Mission Trip”?

After all, if we are spending most of our time at work with those who are not yet saved, then the most obvious place for us to fulfill the Great Commission from our Lord Jesus himself starts right there at our work!

But how do we do that? And is that even allowed in this day and age? We’re paid to go to work to do a job, not to share our faith, right? Anyway, I never went to Bible school or seminary, so that can’t be for me – can it?

To help with this, consider this quote attributed to attributed to St. Francis:

Witness always, use words only when necessary.

That makes it a little easier, right?

The Bible reinforces this concept, telling us that God has already prepared “good works” for you to do in order to bring glory to back to Him (Ephesians 2:10, 1 Peter 2:12). And, what better place to do that than among the non-believers at our work!

But let’s be honest – being on a “Mission Trip” to your work may sound like a nice concept, but difficult to do in practice.

Actually, it’s easier than you think. Done right, your co-workers will enjoy your company, your boss will be pleased, and heaven may smile.

The Bible offers a lot advice for living out our faith and being on mission to our work – but we don’t always hear about this at church.

There are, however, a number of helpful YouVersion study plans for this, so you don’t need to “go it alone”…

Day 3

About this Plan

Should You Go On A Short-term Mission Trip?

Every year, many of us are presented with an opportunity to go on a mission trip. But as a working adult, is this something that you should do? Or is God calling you to something else? How do you know? In this study, we look at what the Bible says about this and your specific role in building God’s Kingdom.
