Why Should We Thank God For The Scars? 

When Paul wrote to the Galatians, mentioning those “marks” in chapter 6 and verse 17, it is highly likely that he had the stoning incident in Lystra in mind. 

To be stoned to death, to have your physical body pulverized with rocks, would certainly leave some scars, some dislocated or broken bones, and other severe bodily injuries. 

Look back on your life. What do scars mean to you? Yes, you have been through a lot. More than you might feel you deserve. And at the time, it was more than you thought you could handle. But look at yourself, at all those scars and bruises (especially the ones so deep inside you that only you and God can see.) There’s no reason to be ashamed of them. No reason to hide them. Because they are living proof that God has seen you through.

Scars are usually not considered to be a beauty mark. People often try to hide their scars with clothing or make-up. And yet scars have a story to tell.

Scars serve as a demarcation line between the past and the present; between what existed prior to the wound that brought the scar, and what exists now on this side of the wound.

Scars tell of a wounding that has occurred. But scars also remind us that a healing has taken place.

Scars remind us of danger and damage that has come our way; but also of recovery and restoration that has followed.

Scars inform us that a permanent change has taken place- that things will never be as they were before.

Sometimes we can cripple our future because of the wounds of the past. Just like how we may have a reaction to our physical scars, for example, having fallen from a tree and fractured a limb, we may develop a phobia for climbing or for heights. Similarly, as a result of our emotional scars, we may develop fears about loving and trusting and feeling and giving and forgiving.

The invisible scars we carry around day after day, year after year are the ones that can create all kinds of phobias in our minds. And until they are removed, God is unable to make his presence strongly felt in our hearts.

Remember God doesn’t give us scars to remind us that we have been hurt. God gives us scars to remind us that we have been healed, we’ve been delivered; and we’ve been set free!
