Journey Of The Seed - Catch The Bible's Big Picture In 60 Days

DAY 31 OF 60

IN GOD’S SIGHT

[Scheduled Reading: 1 Kings 12-18]

The next sixteen fathers in line of The Seed (Judah) are kings.

From the reign of Rehoboam when the kingdoms split, the kingdom of Judah lasts for just over three hundred fifty years (and roughly two hundred years for Israel).

Judah is led by mostly evil kings, with occasional good kings.

Remember the illustration of the western movies – the good guys and bad guys?

Well, now the cast in the line of The Seed gets a bit confusing.

Every member in the line of The Seed is a “good guy” in that they play a part in God’s plan to transfer The Seed.

But when it comes to their character and behavior – they are far from good. Some not only are bad… they’re wicked!

From God’s perspective, these kings either “did right in the sight of the Lord” or “did evil in the sight of the Lord.”

That’s pretty much the summary judgment for each of Judah’s kings. (For Israel, all of the kings are evil).

Most of the time God deals with kings and their respective kingdoms according to what their behavior deserves.

He intercedes for the righteous and inflicts judgment on the evil. Pretty straightforward.

To kick off this decline, God says to Rehoboam, “You have abandoned me, so I have abandoned you.”

Sure enough, Jerusalem is plundered by the Egyptians.

Occasionally God’s judgment seems delayed or absent.

Abijah (#36) follows the pattern (evil) of his father Rehoboam, but he has success against his adversaries.

Next we have Asa (#37) and Jehoshaphat (#38) – both righteous kings.

Both tear down the altars for idol worship and initiate worship reforms according to the law of Moses.

God honors both kings and gives them success against their enemies.

Reading through the books of Kings (and 2 Chronicles) can be tough reading. Times are dark and evil prevails.

The path of The Seed seems headed toward extinction at times. But as has been since the beginning, God is in control.
