Today we’re talking about an abandoned group of people. They were talked about all throughout the Scriptures, and no matter how much we try to help this group of people, they’re still feeling abandoned to this day. 

What group of people am I talking about? The poor. Whether in the poorest or wealthiest of countries, there are always going to be people in need. It’s why Jesus made clear that we should take care of those in need. 

He told a story about a king who separated the ‘sheep’ from the ‘goats’. The ‘sheep’ were ones who took care of those in need. The ‘goats’ were the ones who did not. He said this about the ‘sheep’: “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” 

The ‘goats’ chose not to assist. It didn’t end so well for them, because by contrast he said to the goats, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’

The takeaway for today is this: Helping the poor is not just suggested; it’s commanded.

Ask yourself: Among all the people I know, who would be considered ‘the poor’? Because YOU can give hope to those who have lost hope. YOU can bring joy to those who once felt abandoned. YOU can do what everyone else overlooks for ‘the least of these’. And remember: “Whatever you did for the least of these, you did for me.”
