There is something that will make your life on this earth more bearable. The love of a spouse is recommended by the Teacher. 

Having a companion to share the joys and sorrows of this journey makes sense on several levels. For the Teacher the primary one was because it was your portion in this life given to you by God. There are other places where being single is preferred, so take heart if you haven’t found your companion yet. 

The Teacher admonishes the reader to give their best effort in whatever work they find themselves. In the New Testament we are told to do this as if we are working for the Lord. Here, we are to do our best work because we will not be able to do so once we die! Aren’t you glad that Jesus gave us a more complete look at what the afterlife will be like? The bleak view of the Teacher is a stark comparison to the hope of the Gospel of a new Heaven and a new Earth!
