Reading The Bible 101Sample
Becoming Bible Engaged
Reading the Bible is not only a lifetime pursuit but a joyful one. The Holy Spirit is going to guide you through this journey of learning to read and study His Word.
As mentioned on day one of this plan, attending a church to have a Bible-teaching influence is important. Also, studying the structure of the Bible is helpful to Bible reading. However, something I like to add to these and hand to new believers is some sort of material that will assist you in reading the Bible. This material would be to assist but not replace Scripture at all. Not to substitute the Bible but to actually lead you into the study of the Scriptures. You could visit your local Christian bookstore and ask for recommendations. Ask your church or pastor if they recommend or have any material to give you.
Lastly, it’s important to get connected with someone who is a mature believer. Ask your pastor if he can link you to someone who knows the Bible. Someone who knows the Bible enough to answer questions in an ongoing way. Be assured that as you read you are going to have questions. This person will not only help answer any questions but also will hold you accountable. You can set goals with him/her. For example, reading a chapter a week and meeting up to discuss that specific chapter. Or taking notes and reviewing it together weekly.
I want to encourage you on this new journey of becoming Bible-engaged. Do not think about what you don’t know. Do not become impatient with your understanding of the structure and the purpose of it all. Remember that reading the Bible is a lifetime pursuit. It never stops. It doesn’t matter if you have been reading it for weeks or years – it’s ongoing. Over time you will grow and mature in your faith. God’s Word is a lamp to your feet and a light to your path. It is a book that equips you and fills you with hope. 2nd Timothy says, “Every part of the Scripture is God-breathed and useful one way or another…Through the Word we are put together and shaped up for the tasks God has for us.” It will shape you. God will speak to you through His Word. Have no doubt about it.
It is a good day to get started. Open His Word. Pray that His Spirit guides you accordingly on this joyful pursuit of Bible reading.
