The Shadow Of My Porch Swing - Part 4

DAY 7 OF 7

Dirt and Worms

I’m familiar with the five love languages but am convinced that food most definitely is number six. Fortunately, I grew up in the Deep South where eating well was not a problem, even for us poor folk. I’m pretty sure I could happily survive on beans, cornbread, rice, and gravy for the rest of my life. Simple is good. Now that I have five boys in the house, I’m convinced that food can solve any problem. Sick? Chicken and dumplings. Mad? Ice cream. Big game? Pretzels and crackers. Tired? Grilled cheese and apples.

If I notice they have had a rather hard work or school day, my favorite quick go-to is pudding pie. Just a simple box of pudding poured into a graham cracker crust. It takes all shapes. Lemon and cream, vanilla and bananas, chocolate and cookie crumbles. Add some gummy worms, give it a cool name and we are rocking the party! My family gathers around the table quickly when I call. They come empty handed and leave filled up. It’s my joy to feed them because I love them.

Today Jesus invited me to come to His table. Come and eat, He wants to fill me up, yet I have this lingering doubt. Do you really want just me? I don’t have much to offer...I should really bring something...earn my place at your table. I scrape together a chocolate dirt and worms pudding pie full of excuses, I’m sorrys and should haves. I bring along a list of what I think I got right and how I’m trying so hard. It’s the best I could do amidst the hurriedness of life.

Arriving, I’m embarrassed to see I am His only guest. There is a table full of my favorites laid out before me as a reminder of how well He knows my heart. Then Jesus himself serves me. The main course of truth with a side of grace and oh-so-sweet bread of life lathered in love. I set my dirt and worms pie off to the side realizing my effort wasn’t needed, He just wanted me to enjoy dinner on the house.

What makes you hesitant to come empty handed before God? What truth do you need to consume today?

Father, your table is lavish and your love is extravagant. You freely gave your Son for my life so I know you will withhold nothing less. I want to enjoy the finest food, not settle for leftovers. Help me have ears to hear your call so I can quickly come eat at your table.
