DAY TWO: Everything Changed With Jesus
To understand how law and grace should shape us today, we have to understand what the law was before grace came to us in Jesus Christ. And then we have to understand what the law is now that we are under grace. Consider:
- The Old Covenant requires a high priest. The New Covenant gives us Jesus as the High Priest.
- The Old Covenant gives us a tabernacle. The New Covenant gives us heaven, or a heavenly tabernacle.
- The Old Covenant gives us the sacrifice of animals for atonement for sin. The New Covenant gives us the once-and-for-all sacrifice of Jesus Christ as our atonement for sin.
The ceremonial law is fulfilled. However, the civil law—what some call the moral law—was God’s will for the way men treated each other, the condition of their hearts toward God, His commandments for the running of a society, and His will in a thousand practical matters. This part of the law governed everything from lawsuits to prisons, from marriage to honor for parents, from treatment of the poor to the treatment of strangers in the land. None of this was merely ceremonial. It was the way God wanted things to be in a society and among a people who wished to please Him.
