The Mission of Jesus
God never makes mistakes and His timing is always impeccable. In the time of Jesus, the reading of the scriptures was a regular practice in the Jewish synagogue. One passage from the Torah and one passage from the Prophets would be read each Sabbath. Historians believe this took place on a three-year cycle. On the very day that it was Jesus’ turn to read, the reading was from Isaiah 61:1-2. What a coincidence! – Not!
So here we have Jesus reading a prophetic scripture that was penned eight hundred years before his birth and the scripture is all about – wait for it – him! Then Jesus, with everyone looking on, proceeds to tell them that this promise was about him. When he did this, Jesus was identifying himself as the promised Messiah.
This passage, in essence, is a declaration of the purpose of Jesus’ coming to Earth. It’s Jesus’ mission statement and it’s all about restoring that which had been lost. Restoration is what Jesus is all about!
Carefully reread verses 18 and 19. See if there’s a promise in there for you today.
