Illuminate: A 21-Day JourneySample
Day 8: His Leaving Was For Our Good
So far, we’ve walked through some of the characteristics of what an illuminated life looks like. But how did we get that light in the first place? For three whole years, the disciples had Jesus with them in person. He taught them and performed miracles right in front of their eyes. He illuminated their lives and the lives of so many. But what about when he left? What then? Take a second and read John 16:1–15 before reading the reflection. As you read this passage, focus on God’s promise to the disciples.
Reflection
It can be hard to stay illuminated with everything that goes on around us. Luckily, we don’t have to do it on our own as this passage alludes to. When Jesus returned to the Father, he promised to send us an Advocate—the Holy Spirit. Moreover, he promised that the Spirit would guide us. Essentially, Jesus illuminated the way to life and immortality through the Good News, and then sent the Holy Spirit to keep his light shining in us so we might illuminate the way for others.
- Have you been having doubts? If so, what are they?
- How have you gone about trying to deal with those doubts?
- Where do you find truth?
- How have you let the Holy Spirit use you lately?

About this Plan
Coming off a retreat or revival? What next? You and I are the church of Jesus Christ on earth today, the visible representation of an invisible God. We have the Holy Spirit living within us, and have been commissioned to shine (illuminate) his love in the midst of a dark world. But what does that mean? How did we get here? And what do we do with all of this? All good questions, and if you stick with us through this journey, we are confident that the Holy Spirit will open your eyes to the light within you that God intends to use to illuminate the world!
