An activated heart is the best guidepost for where to engage the world’s hunger. Knowing what you care about in general is the clue to where you can serve specifically. Through decades of interactions, your heart has been molded to care about the world in a particular way. No one on the planet is just like you. Your heart is singular in its formation. Out of eight billion people, no one shares an identical composite of experiences or ideals that inform how you view the world.

For some reason, women have trouble believing me when I say this. Maybe it’s because I keep telling my clients they aren’t unicorns that they have difficulty reconciling this idea. Which is it? Am I unique or like everyone else? But both things are true. Human beings have more in common than not, sharing many of the same fears and hopes for their individual lives. But your heart is the exception to that rule. You’re an anomaly. Every woman I’ve worked with has been wired to care about the world in a different way, tripped up by unique irritations and grieved by different evils.

God’s grace is that our hearts are not all sensitive to the same wounds. One woman I coached cared deeply about providing people with access to clean water. Another was fixated on saving the vulnerable from sex trafficking and protecting children from abuse. I’ve worked with a woman intent on breaking down gender biases and still another who considered the greatest problem in the world to be the lack of sustainable building materials. While we can all tacitly agree that these issues are important, our hearts are likely not moved at the same time to the same degree to focus on dismantling these cancers of the human experience. We care, and we would donate a few dollars to the cause or sign a petition, but our shared disappointment and passion disperses at the point of greater action.

Father, there are so many issues in the world today, and I want to help. Please lead me to discover which causes I am passionate about so that I can focus my efforts on ways that use the gifts you’ve given me. Amen.
