A Light Unto Your Path
By Robert Morris
When I first got saved, I began writing notes and thoughts in the margins of my Bible. Now, just about every page is full. Recently, I came across today’s verse in that Bible, and I saw a quote I wrote down in the margin years ago when I heard R.A. Corey preach. He said, “Sin will keep me from this book. This book will keep me from sin.” Think about that statement and apply it to today’s verse, 1 John 1:5–7, which says, “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
Nobody practicing evil comes to the light, which is the Word of God. When you’re in sin, when you’re in a difficult situation, when you’re running from God, the last thing you want to do is read the Bible. However, reading the Bible is the first thing you ought to do. When you get caught in sin, when you fall, when you make a mistake, when you’re in bondage, read the Bible. Why? Because light dispels darkness.
When you turn the light switch on, there’s no argument between light and dark. There’s no fight or struggle. You turn the light on—darkness is gone. If you want to get out of a dark place in your life, the best thing you can do is read God’s Word, because it’s a lamp for your feet. It lights the path ahead of you and guides you out of darkness.
In the same way, if you’re at a standstill in your life and you don’t know what to do or where to go, God’s Word will light your path. The interesting thing about a lamp is that it only provides light for a small area. You might only be able to see one or two steps ahead, but God sees the entire path in front of you. Not only does God’s Word provide a lamp, it gives you an opportunity to put your trust in Him.
Prayer
Father, thank You for Your Word that sheds light into every area of my life. I surrender to You any area of my life that has darkness, and I trust in You to be a lamp to my feet. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Memory Verse
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known to God. Philippians 4:6

This 31-day devotional, compiled from teachings by Pastors Robert Morris and Marcus Breechen from Gateway Church, focuses on the importance of having God’s Word in your everyday life. Each day reveals what the Word is—breath, bread, water, a sword, and a lamp—and how it applies to your life. As you read, you’ll be inspired to draw closer to God and hide His Word in your heart daily.
