John 2

Jesus Changes Water Into Wine
1Two days later there was a wedding at Cana in Galilee. Jesus’ mother was there, 2and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. 3When the wine ran out, Jesus’ mother said to him, “They don’t have any wine left.”
4“Dear woman, what’s going on here?” Jesus responded. “My time hasn’t come yet.”
5His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
6There were six water jars nearby made from stone. The Jews used water from that kind of jar to wash themselves so that they would be pure and clean. Each jar could hold 20 to 30 gallons.
7Jesus said to the servants, “Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them right to the top.
8Then he told them, “Now take some out and bring it to the person in charge of the banquet.”
So they did what he said. 9The person in charge tasted the water that had been turned into wine, but he didn’t know where it had come from, though the servants who brought the water knew. He called over the groom 10and said to him, “Everyone brings out their best wine first, and after the guests have been drinking for a while, then they bring out the cheaper wine. But you’ve saved the best until now.”
11What Jesus did at Cana in Galilee was the first of his signs showing his glory. Because of it, his disciples believed in him.
12After that, Jesus went down to Capernaum with his mother and brothers and his disciples. They all stayed there for a few days.
Jesus Clears Out the Temple Courtyard
13When it was almost time for the Jewish Passover Feast, Jesus went up to Jerusalem. 14In the temple courtyard he found people selling cattle, sheep, and doves. Others were sitting at tables exchanging money. 15Jesus made a whip out of ropes and chased everyone out of the temple courtyard with their sheep and cattle. He scattered the coins of the people who were exchanging money, and he flipped their tables over. 16He told those who were selling doves, “Get these out of here! Stop turning my Father’s house into a market!” 17His disciples remembered that it was written, “I will be consumed with great love for your house.”
18Then the Jewish leaders asked him, “What sign can you show us to prove that you have the right to do this?”
19Jesus answered them, “Destroy this temple, and I will raise it up again in three days.”
20They answered, “It has taken 46 years to build this temple. Are you going to raise it up in three days?” 21But the temple Jesus was speaking about was his body. 22After he had been raised from the dead, his disciples remembered what he had said. Then they believed the Scripture and the words Jesus had spoken.
23While he was in Jerusalem at the Passover Feast, many people saw the signs he was doing and believed in his name. 24But Jesus didn’t trust them, because he knew what people are like. 25He didn’t need anyone to tell him what people are like, because he already knew what’s inside of a person.
