Spre dimineață, Isus a venit la ei mergând pe mare. Când L-au văzut mergând pe apă, discipolii Lui s-au speriat și au zis: „Este o fantomă!” Și din cauza fricii, au țipat. Isus le-a zis imediat: „Curaj! Nu vă speriați! Eu sunt!” Petru I-a zis: „Doamne, dacă Tu ești, atunci ordonă-mi să vin la Tine pe apă!” Isus i-a zis: „Vino!” Petru a coborât și a început să meargă pe apă spre Isus. Dar când a constatat că vântul bătea cu mare intensitate, i-a fost frică; și fiindcă începea să se scufunde, a strigat: „Doamne, salvează-mă!” Isus a întins mâna imediat și l-a prins, zicându-i: „Nu ai fost suficient de curajos. Credința ta este superficială!” După ce au urcat în barcă, vântul nu a mai bătut. Cei care erau în barcă, au venit să se închine înaintea lui Isus și I-au zis: „Tu ești adevăratul Fiu al lui Dumnezeu!”
