Nașterea lui Isus Cristos a decurs astfel: Maria, mama Lui, era logodită cu Iosif. Dar înainte de căsătoria lor și înainte ca ei să locuiască împreună, Spiritul Sfânt a făcut ca ea să fie însărcinată. Iosif, bărbatul cu care era ea logodită, era un om corect. El și-a propus să desființeze logodna (lor) în secret, ca să evite rușinea publică la care i-ar fi fost expusă logodnica. În timp ce medita el la acest plan, i s-a revelat în vis un înger al lui Iahve, zicându-i: „Iosif, urmașul lui David, nu te neliniștii cu privire la acceptarea Mariei ca soție. Copilul pe care Îl poartă ea este de la Spiritul Sfânt. Urmează să nască un fiu Căruia Îi vei pune numele Isus – pentru că El Își va salva poporul de păcate.” S-a întâmplat exact cum spusese Iahve prin profetul care zicea: „Să știți că fecioara va rămâne însărcinată și va naște un Fiu pe care Îl vor numi Emanuel.” Acest nume înseamnă „Dumnezeu (este) cu noi”.
