În acea vreme, Cezar Augustus a decretat un recensământ al tuturor oamenilor din imperiu. Acel recensământ a fost primul de acest fel în perioada guvernării lui Quirinius în Siria. Înregistrarea tuturor locuitorilor imperiului se făcea pentru fiecare cetățean în localitatea originii strămoșilor lui. Pentru că provenea genealogic din (regele) David, Iosif a plecat și el din orașul Nazaret aparținând provinciei Galileea, în Betleem care aparținea de provincia Iudeea. Acolo urma să se înregistreze în evidența populației (imperiului) împreună cu Maria – logodnica lui – care era însărcinată. În timp ce erau acolo, Maria ajunsese la termenul când trebuia să nască.
