The Resurrection of Jesus
Mt 28:1–10; Mk 16:1–8; Jn 20:1–10
1Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices they had prepared. # Lk 24:10; Jn 20:1–2 2They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3But when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. # Lk 24:23 4While they were greatly perplexed concerning this, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. # Mk 16:5; Ac 1:10 5As they were afraid and bowed their faces to the ground, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6He is not here, but has risen! Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, # Mt 17:22–23; Lk 9:22 7saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’ ” 8Then they remembered His words.
9And they returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. 10It was Mary Magdalene and Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and other women with them, who told these things to the apostles. # Mk 15:40–41; Lk 8:2–3 11But their words seemed like fables to them, and they did not believe them. # Mk 16:11 12But Peter rose and ran to the tomb. Stooping down, he saw the linen clothes lying by themselves. He departed, wondering in himself what had happened.
The Walk to Emmaus
Mk 16:12–13
13Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles # 24:13 Gk 60 stadia, or 11 kilometers. from Jerusalem. 14They were talking with each other about all these things that had happened. 15While they communed and reasoned together, Jesus Himself drew near and went with them. # Lk 24:36 16But their eyes were kept from recognizing Him. # Jn 20:14; 21:4
17He said to them, “What kind of communication are you sharing with one another while you are walking and are sad?”
18One of them, named Cleopas, # Jn 19:25 answered Him, “Are You the only foreigner in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened there in these days?”
19He said to them, “What things?”
They said to Him, “Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, # Mt 21:11; Ac 2:22 powerful in deed and word before God and all the people, 20and how our chief priests and rulers # Lk 23:13 handed Him over to be sentenced to death and crucified Him. 21But we were hoping that it was He who was to redeem Israel. # Lk 1:68; 2:38 Moreover, today is the third day since these things happened. 22Even some women from among us, who arrived early at the tomb, surprised us. 23When they did not find His body, they returned saying that they had even seen a vision of angels, who said that He was alive. 24Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. But they did not see Him.” # Lk 24:12
25He said to them, “O fools! And slow of heart to believe what the prophets have spoken! 26Was it not necessary for the Christ to suffer these things and to enter His glory?” # Lk 24:46; 1Pe 1:11 27And beginning with Moses # Ge 3:15 and all the Prophets, # Isa 7:14 He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.
28They drew near the village where they were traveling, and He seemed to be going farther. # Mk 6:48 29But they urged Him, saying, “Stay with us. For it is nearly evening and the day is far spent.” So He went in to stay with them.
30As He sat at supper with them, He took the bread, blessed it and broke it, and gave it to them. # Mt 14:19; Lk 24:35 31Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized Him. And He vanished out of their sight. # Lk 4:30; 24:16 32They said to each other, “Did not our hearts burn within us # Ps 39:3 while He talked to us on the way and while He opened the Scriptures to us?” # Lk 24:45
33They rose up and returned to Jerusalem at once. And they found the eleven and those who were with them assembled together, 34saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!” # 1Co 15:5 35Then they reported what had happened on the way, and how He was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.
Jesus Appears to the Disciples
Mt 28:16–20; Mk 16:14–18; Jn 20:19–23; Ac 1:6–8
36As they were saying this, Jesus Himself stood among them # Mk 16:14 and said to them, “Peace be unto you.” # Jn 14:27
37They were terrified and frightened, and supposed that they saw a spirit. 38He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39See My hands and My feet, # Jn 20:20, 27 that it is I Myself. Feel Me and see. # 1Jn 1:1 For a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.”
40When He said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. 41And while they yet disbelieved for joy and wondered, He said to them, “Do you have any food here?” # Jn 21:5 42They gave Him a piece of broiled fish and some honeycomb. 43And He took it and ate it before them. # Ac 10:41
44He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and in the Prophets and in the Psalms concerning Me.” # Ps 22; 69; 72; 110; 118
45Then He opened their minds # Job 33:16; Ac 16:14 to understand the Scriptures. 46He said to them, “Thus it is written, and accordingly it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, # Lk 24:44 47and that repentance and remission of sins # Ac 5:31 should be preached in His name to all nations, # Mt 28:19; Ac 2:38 beginning at Jerusalem. 48You are witnesses of these things. # Ac 1:8; 2:32 49And behold, I am sending the promise of My Father upon you. # Jn 14:26 But wait in the city of Jerusalem until you are clothed with power from on high.” # Ac 1:4
The Ascension
Mk 16:19–20; Ac 1:9–11
50Then He led them out as far as Bethany, # Mt 21:17 and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. 51While He blessed them, He parted from them and was carried up into heaven. # 2Ki 2:11; Mk 16:19 52Then they worshipped Him, # Mt 28:9 and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, # Jn 16:22 53and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
