The Mission of the Seventy
1After this the Lord appointed seventy others, # Nu 11:16; Dt 10:22 and sent them two by two ahead of Him into every city and place where He Himself was about to come. # Lk 9:52 2He said to them, “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Pray therefore # 2Th 3:1 the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3Go your way. Behold, I send you out as lambs among wolves. # Mt 10:16 4Carry no bag, no pouch, no shoes, # Lk 22:35 and greet no one on the road. # 2Ki 4:29
5“When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ # 1Sa 25:6 6If a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him; but if not, it will return upon you. # Ps 35:13 7Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they give, for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Do not go from house to house.
8“When you enter a city and they receive you, eat what is set before you. # 1Co 10:27 9Heal the sick who are there and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ # Mt 3:2; Lk 10:11 10But when you enter a city and they do not receive you, go your way out into their streets and say, 11‘Even the dust of your city which clings to us, we wipe off against you. Yet be sure of this, that the kingdom of God has come near to you.’ # Lk 10:9 12But I say to you, it will be more tolerable on that Day for Sodom than for that city. # Mt 10:15; 11:24
Unrepentant Cities
Mt 11:20–24
13“Woe to you, # Lk 6:24–26 Chorazin! # Mt 11:21 Woe to you, Bethsaida! # Lk 9:10 For if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon # Isa 23; Eze 26:1–28:26 which have been done for you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. # Lk 12:47–48 15And you, Capernaum, # Mt 4:13 will you be exalted to heaven? You will be thrust down to Hades. # Isa 14:13–15
16“He who listens to you listens to Me, he who rejects you rejects Me, and he who rejects Me rejects Him who sent Me.” # Mt 10:40; Jn 12:48
The Return of the Seventy
17The seventy returned with joy, # Lk 10:1 saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us through Your name.” # Mk 16:17
18He said to them, “I saw Satan as lightning fall from heaven. 19Behold, I give you authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy. And nothing shall by any means hurt you. # Ps 91:13; Mk 16:18 20Nevertheless do not rejoice that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” # Ex 32:32; Ps 69:28; Da 12:1; Rev 21:27
The Rejoicing of Jesus
Mt 11:25–27; 13:16–17
21In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants. # Ps 8:2; 1Co 1:26–31 Yes, Father, for it was Your good pleasure. # Ps 115:3
22“All things have been handed over to Me by My Father. # Mt 28:18 And no one knows who the Son is but the Father, and who the Father is but the Son # Jn 1:18 and he to whom the Son desires to reveal Him.”
23Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see what you see. # Mt 13:16–17 24For I tell you, many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, # Jn 8:56 and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.” # Heb 11:13; 1Pe 1:10–12
The Good Samaritan
25And behold, a lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” # Lk 18:18
26He said to him, “What is written in the law? How do you read?”
27He answered, “ ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind’ # Dt 6:5 # 10:27 Dt 6:5. and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’ # Lev 19:18; Mt 19:19 # 10:27 Lev 19:18. ”
28He said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this, and you will live.” # Lev 18:5; Eze 20:11
29But he, desiring to justify himself, # Lk 16:15 said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”
30Jesus answered, “A man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing and wounded him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31Now by chance, a priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32So likewise a Levite, when he came to that place, looked at him and passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, # Mt 10:5 as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion on him, 34and went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine. Then he set him on his own donkey and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35The next day when he departed, he took out two denarii # 10:35 Gk denarius, a coin worth about a day’s wage. and gave them to the innkeeper and said to him, ‘Take care of him. I will repay you whatever else you spend when I return.’
36“Now which of these three do you think was a neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?”
37He said, “The one who showed mercy on him.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” # 2Co 8:9; 1Pe 2:21
Visiting Martha and Mary
38As they went, He entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed Him into her house. 39She had a sister called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet # Lk 8:35; Ac 22:3 and listened to His teaching. 40But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she came to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Then tell her to help me.”
41But Jesus answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things. # Mt 6:25–34 42But one thing is needed. # Ps 27:4 And Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken from her.”
