Crowder - Neon Steeple Devotions

DAY 7 OF 7

"Here's My Heart" Devotional

Crowder

“Here’s my heart, Lord, Here’s my heart, Lord / Here’s my heart, Lord, Speak what is true. / I am found, I am Yours, I am loved, I’m made pure / I have life, I can breathe, I am healed, I am free.”

The heart is a funny thing. We give our hearts away, yet we’re told to guard them (Proverbs 4:23). They can become hard and soft. Within our hearts are our desires, our source of strength, our treasure. It’s no wonder that Jeremiah said, “The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9). That’s a good question.

Given the focus and importance of the heart not only in Scriptures but life in general, we would be wise to heed the words in “Here’s My Heart”. It’s a prayer and presentation of our hearts to God – asking Him to protect us from the lies we might believe. Our hearts can lead us in directions we were never intended to go if we are not careful. Perhaps that’s what Jeremiah meant when he wrote those words. It’s also likely why David wrote a very memorable prayer request in Psalm 139.

David knew that he could not trust his own heart without the guidance of God at work within it. We have the Holy Spirit to help us as our conscience and counselor to provide the same direction to our hearts that are pulled in all directions on most days. Notice that David doesn’t even try to come up with a list on his own. His own heart could deceive him. Instead he asks God to search his heart and help him see his own blind spots.

The heart is a beautiful organ, the source of life in us physically, emotionally, and spiritually. It makes it vital for us, then, to offer our hearts to God and present the same offering that both the psalm and song speak of. May God search our hearts and orient them to the good things in this world.
