God’s Love Compels Us
“The love of God is one of the great realities of the universe, a pillar on which the hope of the world rests.” – A.W. Tozer, The Knowledge of the Holy
Read: Ephesians 3:16-21
Since the beginning of creation humanity has attempted to understand God. We have strived to wrap our minds around the immeasurable Deity. Yet the task is impossible. The Lord declared that His thoughts are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are His ways higher than ours (Isa. 55:8-9).
Perhaps that is why it is so difficult to embrace the infinitude of God’s love and the boundless beauty of His grace. In our finite understanding, we tend to measure God’s love by our circumstances, our feelings, our deeds, and our shortcomings. Yet those things cannot limit or restrain His love. The Apostle Paul understood this and was therefore inspired to pray for God’s people to grasp the vastness of this incredible love.
“His love is measureless. It is more: It is boundless. It has not bounds because it is not a thing but a facet of the essential nature of God. His love is something He is, and because He is infinite that love can enfold the whole created world in itself and have room for 10,000 x 10,000 worlds beside.” – A.W. Tozer
It is because of this love that we enter into the fight against injustice. This is why we pray, believing He will respond. This love “that surpasses knowledge” is the force that compels us to act, because we are convinced that He died for all. (2 Cor. 5:14; Eph. 3:19)
Discussion Questions for Reflection and Application
1. Reflect on a time in which you tangibly felt God’s love.
2. Why do you think it’s so difficult for people to accept God’s unconditional love and mercy?
3. The Lord often uses His people to carry out His will. How do you think you can be a reflection of God’s love to the oppressed?
4. How do you think the struggle to accept God’s love might affect victims of human trafficking?
