Worship is the essence of God’s will

God called Moses. His task of delivering the entire Hebrew nation from the bondage of Egypt looked impossible, but an impossible task is just the sort of thing God specializes in.

Even when the task is large God doesn’t necessarily recruit an army. He often begins with a single man or woman. People with passion throughout history were used by God to change their circumstances and to change hearts.

One man or one woman, plus God, does not equal two. One man or one woman, plus God, equals exponential, infinite power. Moses’ job wasn’t deliverance; that was God’s job. Moses’ job was obedience to the God of God’s will. The secret weapon of every stutterer is placing trust in his or her God who speaks clearly!

Finally, the way of God's will is not always easy. Moses encountered resistance and trouble on almost every front after he accepted God's assignment. But those troubles were only the by-product of God's will, not the essence of it.

When we try to follow God's will and are met with resistance, we begin to worry that we have misheard Him! The truth is, the tough stuff is part of His plan too.

Smooth sailing is no litmus test for the will of God. Moses did not lead the people out of Egypt for his own pleasure and enjoyment, but for eternal impact and for God's glory. Our aim is the same. We were made for worship, and worship is the essence of God’s will. William Temple, the renowned Archbishop of Canterbury, defined worship as "the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness, the nourishment of the mind with his truth, the purifying of the imagination of his beauty, the opening of the heart to his love, the surrender of the will to his purpose.”

God's will moves us toward worship, because His will is about Him, not about us. Worship is our way and our end, our traveling companion and our destination. Don't confuse the by-products of God's will—especially the negative ones—with the end and essence of His will: worship. The plan of God for us is not short-term ease, but long-term impact. We are tools in His hands so that the glory might be His and His alone. The “who” precedes the “what.”
