The Power of Earning InfluenceSample

Yet another person from the Bible that I view as a great leader who understood the power of earning influence was a man named Nehemiah. I believe that Nehemiah, although often overlooked, is a prime example of what a leader is capable of when they positively influence those around them. At the start of Nehemiah’s story, he was a simple servant, describing himself as a “cupbearer to the king.” Nehemiah learns of the destruction of the walls of Jerusalem, which upsets him greatly. Using his influence with the king, whom he had served for years prior, he gets permission to journey to Jerusalem in order to repair the wall and the gate. Nehemiah, with the blessings of God, sets out with the King’s officers and cavalry to assist Jerusalem.

Like David, I believe that Nehemiah relied on his humble beginnings, as well as his servant heart in order to persuade others to join him in his rebuilding of the land. Nehemiah felt very strongly about Jerusalem’s destruction, stating that it was the land of his ancestors, and as such, he was obligated to do all that he could.

Sometimes as leaders, we have plans and goals that we want to accomplish. Like Nehemiah, sometimes these goals may appear to be too much for us to reach on our own. With a solid plan, and the Lord to back us up, we should never be afraid to ask for help from our team. Nehemiah’s influence on the King, as well as the people around him, provided him with the ability and opportunity to accomplish what he felt was his duty, in rebuilding Jerusalem.

When you are going through something, and feel that you cannot go through it alone, remember Nehemiah, and understand that you do not have to. One of my greatest tools throughout my career as an entrepreneur and leader, was the people that I had around me. God puts people in your life for a reason. Nehemiah’s job as a cupbearer provided him with the opportunity to do something great. Your job as a Christian will allow you to do the same.
