Fear Of God // Stand In AweSample

Fear Of God // Stand In Awe

DAY 2 OF 14

Stand in Awe

Have you ever had a moment where you've met a famous person and become completely star-struck by them? A couple of weeks ago, I was walking through central London with a few friends, when I saw a famous footballer coming towards us. I’m a massive football fan, so I completely froze! All I could do was watch as he walked past.

That’s a silly example, but it’s a good analogy of what it looks like to stand in awe of God (although He is obviously far greater than any football player)! We sometimes think we need to do more or work harder to get closer to God, but the reality is that we just need to stand in awe. The more you marvel at how great God is, the stronger your relationship with Him will grow. Standing in awe is the key to unlocking true intimacy with God!

In today’s Scripture, it says that everyone will one day stand in awe of God. God is so far above anything of this world that one day He will make sure that everyone will recognise Him as Lord. Yet as Christians, we have the advantage of knowing this truth already, which frees us to live an amazing life with God here on earth.

You may be wondering ‘what does the fear of God actually look like in my life? What do I need to do to fear God?’ Well, Psalms 33:8 tells us that the answer is to stand in awe. I love this, because when you stand, you’re not trying to get anywhere; there’s no striving, it’s actually a position of rest. God’s instruction for us to know Him more is to rest in His presence. How amazing is that!

The dictionary defines ‘awe’ as being a deep respect, accompanied with astonishment and wonder. Our default place of rest is therefore a wonder and astonishment for what God has done! Even if you can’t think of many things to be thankful for today, you can always think back to the cross, and wonder at the miracle of God sending his son for you. He saved you so you could have eternal life; that’s something that should always cause us to stand in awe!
