God has a very compassionate heart. He is very clear that if a woman has lost her husband her relatives are to step up and take care of her. But sometimes this does not happen. Maybe the woman does not have relatives that can care for her. In this case God calls the church to step in and make sure this woman is taken care of. But God also made some guidelines. The widow needs to be 60 or older. She needs to have been a faithful wife, of good reputation, and hospitable.

There are two ways for us to apply this to our lives. First, we need to make sure that we are godly, have a good reputation, do good works, and be faithful to our spouse. Secondly, the church has failed in taken proper care of widows and this needs to be remedied. We must step up and make an effort to minister to these women who have experienced great loss, who may be struggling with sadness and loneliness. Some may have a hard time doing yard work, fixing things in their home or running errands. We must become their friends, their encourager, and their helper.
