The Legacy Journey

DAY 23 OF 31

Marriage Legacy

If you’re married, you need to understand something: Wealth building is a team sport. You and your spouse cannot build wealth in a meaningful way unless you intentionally work together. You have to stand together, arm in arm and side by side, living out God’s destiny for you as a married couple.

That’s important because when couples work together to manage God’s resources, it’s easier to trust one another’s motives. When you’re asking, “What’s God telling us?” you’re less likely to focus on stuff like “I deserve this,” or “I want my rights.” Building wealth as a team safeguards the nobility of your relationship.

It’s also important because you can’t heal a wounded marriage with money. Too many people think that money somehow fixes all their problems, but that’s just not true. Money simply magnifies who we are and what’s going on in our lives. So if you’ve got a damaged marriage, more money just means more damage—and ultimately disaster. That’s why the divorce rate among lottery winners is four times the national average. The chinks in the armor get wider, and the relationship breaks down even faster.

One way to make sure you and your spouse stay on the same page is allowing others to speak into your life. Think of it this way: You become like the people you hang around. We warn our kids about that, but it’s true for marriages as well.

In Proverbs 13:20, Solomon wrote that walking with wise people produces wisdom. In contrast, hanging around fools causes nothing but trouble. So, as husband and wife, you need to surround yourself with wise people who can share their godly wisdom with you.

Marriage and wealth building both require teamwork. If you’re going to be effective in your legacy journey, you’ve got to safeguard your relationship with your spouse. Walk with the wise, and your marriage will reap the financial—and relational—benefits.

If you and your spouse are not on the same page with your money, we’d like to help start the conversation. Financial Peace University is perfect for couples looking to strengthen their communication about money-even if you’re not in debt.
