This old command is the message you have heard. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1JN.2.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Yet I am writing you a new command; its truth is seen in him and in you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1JN.2.8"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="1JN.2.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">Anyone who claims to be in the light but hates a brother or sister</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:9 </span><span class="ft">The Greek word for </span><span class="fq">brother or sister </span><span class="ft">(<span class="tl">adelphos</span>) refers here to a believer, whether man or woman, as part of God&#8217;s family; also in verse 11; and in 3:15, 17; 4:20; 5:16.</span></span></span><span class="content"> is still in the darkness. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1JN.2.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">Anyone who loves their brother and sister</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:10 </span><span class="ft">The Greek word for </span><span class="fq">brother and sister </span><span class="ft">(<span class="tl">adelphos</span>) refers here to a believer, whether man or woman, as part of God&#8217;s family; also in 3:10; 4:20, 21.</span></span></span><span class="content"> lives in the light, and there is nothing in them to make them stumble. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1JN.2.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">But anyone who hates a brother or sister is in the darkness and walks around in the darkness. They do not know where they are going, because the darkness has blinded them.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">Reasons for Writing</span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1JN.2.11"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1JN.2.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">I am writing to you, dear children,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1JN.2.12"><span class="content">because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1JN.2.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1JN.2.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">I am writing to you, fathers,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1JN.2.13"><span class="content">because you know him who is from the beginning.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1JN.2.13"><span class="content">I am writing to you, young men,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1JN.2.13"><span class="content">because you have overcome the evil one.</span></span></div><div class="b"></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1JN.2.13"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.2.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">I write to you, dear children,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.2.14"><span class="content">because you know the Father.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.2.14"><span class="content">I write to you, fathers,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.2.14"><span class="content">because you know him who is from the beginning.</span></span></div><div class="q1"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.2.14"><span class="content">I write to you, young men,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.2.14"><span class="content">because you are strong,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.2.14"><span class="content">and the word of God lives in you,</span></span></div><div class="q2"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.2.14"><span class="content">and you have overcome the evil one.</span></span></div><div class="s1"><span class="heading">On Not Loving the World</span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.2.14"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="1JN.2.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father</span><span class="note f"><span class="label">#</span><span class=" body"><span class="fr">2:15 </span><span class="ft">Or </span><span class="fqa">world, the Father&#8217;s love</span></span></span><span class="content"> is not in them. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="1JN.2.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">For everything in the world&#8212;the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life&#8212;comes not from the Father but from the world. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="1JN.2.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.</span></span></div>

Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. </span></span><span class="verse v8" data-usfm="1JN.4.8"><span class="label">8</span><span class="content">Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. </span></span><span class="verse v9" data-usfm="1JN.4.9"><span class="label">9</span><span class="content">This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. </span></span><span class="verse v10" data-usfm="1JN.4.10"><span class="label">10</span><span class="content">This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. </span></span><span class="verse v11" data-usfm="1JN.4.11"><span class="label">11</span><span class="content">Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. </span></span><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1JN.4.12"><span class="label">12</span><span class="content">No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v12" data-usfm="1JN.4.12"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v13" data-usfm="1JN.4.13"><span class="label">13</span><span class="content">This is how we know that we live in him and he in us: He has given us of his Spirit. </span></span><span class="verse v14" data-usfm="1JN.4.14"><span class="label">14</span><span class="content">And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. </span></span><span class="verse v15" data-usfm="1JN.4.15"><span class="label">15</span><span class="content">If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in them and they in God. </span></span><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="1JN.4.16"><span class="label">16</span><span class="content">And so we know and rely on the love God has for us.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v16" data-usfm="1JN.4.16"><span class="content">God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them. </span></span><span class="verse v17" data-usfm="1JN.4.17"><span class="label">17</span><span class="content">This is how love is made complete among us so that we will have confidence on the day of judgment: In this world we are like Jesus. </span></span><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="1JN.4.18"><span class="label">18</span><span class="content">There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.</span></span></div><div class="p"><span class="verse v18" data-usfm="1JN.4.18"><span class="content">  </span></span><span class="verse v19" data-usfm="1JN.4.19"><span class="label">19</span><span class="content">We love because he first loved us. </span></span><span class="verse v20" data-usfm="1JN.4.20"><span class="label">20</span><span class="content">Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen. </span></span></div>
