Comfort Ye My People

Reflection

“Behold your God!”

When was the last time you truly beheld your God? I mean really - more than a fleeting thought or a passing amazement - when have you sat still and considered the glory of our God? The bigness - the power and reach and enormity and accomplishment - of GOD!

Does it make you tremble? Does it take your breath away? Does it stir worship within you?

He is, after all, the great Creator. The giver of wisdom. The just, all-knowing, ever-present God. Great in size and might and understanding and power. Nothing compares to Him.

It makes me feel small in the most amazing way. God’s greatness doesn’t make me feel insignificant - it gives me significance. The great, high Creator of the Universe became human just like me. And that all-knowing, ever-present God who spoke the oceans and mountains and forests into being died an excruciating, shameful death because He loves me.

He is big, and He made himself small.

No, God’s greatness doesn’t diminish my importance. And it doesn’t concern me that I may be overlooked. God’s greatness is my great comfort, because He has told me how he feels about me. He told me that He loves me with an everlasting love. (Jeremiah 31:3)

And if the great enormity of my God causes me to feel security and not insecurity, what in this passing world is big enough to woo me away from Him? What obstacle or unknown is great enough to cause me to forget my security in Him?

Sisters, if we truly believe in the greatness of God - in His size and power and sovereignty, His love and saving work - then this is all we need to find comfort for a lifetime.

Behold your God. Rely on His strength. Walk in His comfort.

Prayer

Father, there is no one like you. When the world feels too big and too much, or so shiny and important, help me remember that everything around me is as dust to you. Lord, teach me to be impressed and overwhelmed by you alone. Amen.

Advent Action

As you listen to today’s instrumental song, sit quietly and behold your God! Write in your journal about His marvelous works. Read Isaiah 40 and be amazed by His greatness. Look forward and backward at the Advent story thus far from the vantage point of Isaiah - see what has already taken place, see what will yet take place, look for His hand, and give your own plans over to Him.
