The Songs Of Christmas

DAY 13 OF 15

Inspired by "Jingle Bell Rock" by Newsboys

From the laughter of those closest to us to the jingle of bells on holiday decorations, the sounds of Christmas are all around us this time of year. The senses come alive during the Christmas season with all of the familiar sights, smells and sounds that remind us of family, friends and the joy we share celebrating the birth of Jesus.

We often forget that spectacular and memorable sounds were also a part of the actual Christmas story. We often remember the sights of the Christmas story: the action going on behind the scenes as the various characters respond to the angel’s proclamation. However we forget that a glorious sound was actually the first thing to happen.

Imagine such a heavenly host! It’s difficult to even picture such a supernatural scenario, but our imaginations are usually filled with a vibrant sky illuminated with bright light and the heavens proclaiming the praises of God. It’s a proclamation of praise, proper accompaniment indeed to the birth of Jesus!

We are participants in this same activity – the praise of God for His glorious works. When John receives a vision of the throne of God in Revelation 4, he describes the heavenly host singing continuously of the holiness and greatness of God. David encourages us to do the same in Psalm 96:

Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.

During this Christmas season, you will hear sounds of all kinds from commercial jingles to familiar tunes. Yet through it all, one sound should remain greatest of all – praise for the one who gave us His Son. May we find time this Christmas to continue in the ongoing praise of our Heavenly Father for his great gifts.
