He promised that Jesus could avoid suffering and the cross and still accomplish his mission. “Jesus said to him, ‘Away from me, Satan! For it is written: “Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only”’” (Matthew 4:10). It was the Father, not Satan, who defined Jesus’ mission.
I will never forget the words of a recovering alcoholic who told me once that the bottle had become his god. Where do you go most often for a feeling of self-worth, for comfort, for your identity when you’re stressed or afraid?
