Who is Jesus to You?
Read Mark 8:27–9:1
If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels. Mark 8:38
There are many views of Jesus in this world, as seen in the many books published on Jesus. Most of them are from the speculation of men and are not reliable. But there is one view of Jesus that is true and Peter made that confession.
While the world's opinion is interesting, it is really irrelevant. Jesus knew that His disciples knew what the world was saying about Him. But He wanted to know what they thought about Him. So He challenged them with a question. He asked, “But who do you say that I am?” The little conjunction 'but' says a lot about the force of this question. Jesus was really saying, “The world has its opinion about me; but I really want to know your opinion. Who do you say that I am?” It is important for us to understand that what the world says about Jesus should not shape our thinking about Him. Faith is a personal, individual matter. Each of us must come to Christ individually. It is not good enough that we accept popular opinions about Jesus.
Popular opinions do not define Him. Part of our coming to Christ is our coming to a place where we can confess Him as our Savior and Lord. This confession is an acknowledgement that we personally take Christ as our Savior and commit our lives to live for Him. The confession of discipleship is a cornerstone of our Christian faith. The question Jesus asked the disciples needs to be asked today. It is as pertinent and relevant as it was then. Many people really don’t know personally who Jesus is. Our relationship with Christ will determine our definition of who He is to us.
Pray that everyone in your family will come to a personal knowledge of who Jesus is and what He means to each one of you.
What have you personally seen and experienced about Jesus? What do you believe about Jesus?
