DAY 58 OF 181

Search Me, O God
Read Leviticus 13:1-59

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. Psalm 139:23-24

The infectious skin disease mentioned here is not necessarily the disease we call leprosy today. But it could spread to other people and could be fatal as it slowly and steadily ruined the body. Therefore the disease is often used as an illustration of sin. It is contagious and destructive, unless it is arrested. Therefore we need to regularly assess our own lives for anything that may insidiously work ruin.

The life of Judas Iscariot is a good example of unchecked growth of sin that leads to death. He was one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, and was appointed as treasurer, but he misappropriated the funds. When Jesus did not fit the bill of the leader he had in mind to deliver Israel from the Romans, he sold Jesus to the religious leaders. And with a kiss he betrayed Jesus to his enemies. He then felt remorseful at the unjust treatment Jesus received. Instead of asking Jesus for forgiveness, Judas committed suicide.

The priest plays an important role in deciding whether the person was infected with the skin disease. He had to check the person’s skin rash or swelling very carefully. The priest also decided whether the person was cured. The decision involved an intermittent time of isolation or total separation. The whole process points to the need for accountability of our lives to someone who is more mature and trustworthy. Otherwise unconsciously we may detour from the path that God has charted for us. Like David, we must ask God to search our hearts and test our thoughts.

Let us come humbly before God, seek cleansing for our hearts and thoughts, and receive His forgiveness.
