Bible Reflections From Scripture Union Volume One

DAY 108 OF 181

Property Rights
Read Leviticus 25:1-55

Follow my decrees and be careful to obey my laws, and you will live safely in the land Leviticus 25:18

“In the communes, sir, you will find no churches. You see, religion is for the helpless. Here in China we are not helpless any more,” a commune leader told Brother Andrew (founder of Open Doors International) on his first China trip years ago. Fed-up with the injustices of capitalism, communism took its first confident steps towards a better world – without God. The project failed.

In this chapter, God gave Israel a blueprint for a model society. People were allowed to pursue their aspirations, amass wealth and own property. However, equality was periodically restored. This practice gave dignity to humans and acknowledged that all resources belonged ultimately to God.

Land and labour were given special attention. Every 7 and 50 years, no organized agricultural activity was allowed. All persons and animals found food wherever they could. One ate as well as the other. Every 50 years, land reverted to the original owners and Hebrew slaves were freed. Redemption was also provided for land and slaves at other times.

The Asian Dream, some say, is to leave a large fortune to our children. However, it is also observed that great fortunes seldom last more than three or four generations and cause much trouble and heartache while they last. These laws could prevent such ‘misfortune’ and enable those in desperate situations to start afresh. Acknowledging God and obeying His precepts are the only ways to a better life for society and the individual. The Jubilee also pointed to ‘rest’ and ‘release’ during the Messianic age.

Dear Lord, help me use my resources as if they belong to You, which they do!
