Come And See

Worship is not just an act of declaration – it is also an invitation. We see this really clearly in the Psalms – so many times the Psalmist uses invitational language, encouraging others to join him in His devotion:

“Glorify the Lord with me, let us exalt His name together.” (Psalm 34:4)

He has already determined that He will be a worshipper – but He desires to take others with him. That is the heart of a worship leader.

When we put this into our own context, it’s important to note that we must not always leave the role of worship leading to the pastor and the musicians. There’s a sense in which we can all be worship leaders, helping set the spiritual temperature in our gatherings. Through our passion and commitment to the moment we can exhort one another to be wholehearted in devotion - and lead each other into the depths of true worship.

One of my favorite calls to worship comes in Psalm 66:5:

“Come and see what God has done”.

It is an invitation to worship - and it is also an evangelistic call – beckoning those who have not yet encountered the wonder of God to come and take a closer look. We see this little phrase repeated at other times in scripture also:

- At the empty tomb of the risen Jesus, the angels tell Mary Magdalene and the other Mary: “Come and see the place where we lay.” (Matthew 28:6)

- Nathanuel wonders aloud if anything good can come from Nazareth. Philip invites Him to meet Jesus, with the very same words: “Come and see”.

- The Samaritan woman whose life Jesus speaks into at the well, returns to her town and tells everyone she meets, "Come, see a man who told me everything I ever did.”

In this song we adopted that same biblical invitation, calling both the lost and the found to look upon the cross of Christ:

“Come and see,
Come and see what God has done.
Come and see,
Come and see what love has won.”
