Daily EncouragementSample
Christians are commanded to grow. This in itself is a reflection of the true nature of Christianity. It is not an emotional experience the memory of which we seek to perpetuate, rather it is a growing life. It has its beginning in a new birth, for there can be no growth where there is no life. And there will be critical points, experiences of unforgettable significance, but they will be just that - crisis points in a continuing life. The sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit is a process leading to consummation in glorification. Beware of teaching which lacks emphasis on steady growth in the spiritual life.
Christian growth is a growth in grace. The Lord bids us grow in grace, and himself provides the grace which enables us to grow. He uses his servants, but ultimately “only God makes things grow” (1 Cor. 3:7). And growth is largely a quiet work which takes time.
The ultimate test of Christian growth is the depth of our knowledge of the Lord. We may have much knowledge about him and we may be involved in many Christian activities, yet our knowledge of him may still remain minimal. We must use the means of grace and ask for “the spirit of wisdom and revelation” so that we may know him better.
