Daily Encouragement

DAY 315 OF 366

“Not simply with words, but also with power” - this is the mark of a true work of the Holy Spirit. It is the sign of true conversion, the proof of electing love. The gospel may have been heard before, but it was words only. Now it has come “also with power.” There is genuine repentance and faith. There is radical change - a turning “to God from idols to serve the living and true God“ (verse 9). There is desire to pass on the message that has been received - “the Lord‘s message rang out from you” (verse 8).

“Simply with words . . . ” herein lies the danger of a superficial acceptance of the gospel. The language of faith may be used, but there is no change in the life. The idols remain. this is characteristic, too, of a backslidden condition. What once was “with power” is now “simply with words.” The words remain on the lips, but the fire has gone out in the heart. The gospel bells no longer ring. The doctrine of the Lord’s coming may still be maintained, but the hope has faded.

“Not simply with words but also with power” - this is the way of revival. It causes men to remember their original experience, of Christ. They repent and turn again to the living God, and he restores to them the joy of their salvation (Ps. 51:12).
